Who We Are KalaAnantarupah Media Labs –Production Department is the International producer and distributor of distinctive and audacious audiovisual content. Our mandate has been to engage Talents and the world audience through the production of artistic and innovative media that reflects our country and world audience’s points of view.
We are looking to work with a wide range of creators -- filmmakers and other media artists -- in the production of KML Films, documentaries, animation and original interactive digital content for all platforms including theatre,tv,mobile and the Web.
The KML’s Leadership Stage Filmmaking -Power up with TEAMS Program is a unique creative laboratory, providing artists and storytellers with an opportunity to develop new forms of artistic, imaginative and socially relevant media.
As creative producers, we work closely with directors, artists and co-producers to build collaborative teams around projects and help shape conditions for success.
Selection Process and Criteria
Some ideas for the projects we produce come to us as pitches. Some are generated internally. Others are borne out of extended conversations with like-minded creators. All are measured against our overall programming criteria, which includes:
• Talent and vision of the creator/director
• Originality of concept and approach
• Creative excellence
• Great storytelling
• Innovation in form
• Clearly articulated sense of the intended audience
• Social relevance and impact
• Viability of project (in terms of access, timeframe and budget)
We produce projects from across the country: from a wide range of communities, on a wide range of topics and reflecting a diversity of voices.
We want to tell stories that aren't being told elsewhere and from perspectives that are underrepresented in the media. Ensuring our mix of projects reflects this balance means we consider some additional factors when deciding which projects to produce/coproduce:
• Genre balance (films, documentary, animation, new media)
• Diversity of stories/topics (for example, even if all the stories were very original, it's unlikely we'd produce six films on a given topic—say the environment-- at the same time)
• Diversity of filmmakers
• Aboriginal voices
• Regional reflection
• Gender ratio
• Target audience
• Formats (including multiplatform and educational)
• Ratio of productions vs co-productions vs international co-productions
As a niche producer focused on the high-end of the production spectrum, we are very selective about the projects we produce and coproduce. We complete between 60-70 productions a year: a mix of films, documentaries, animations and original digital projects.
Our resources are finite. Unfortunately we can't produce every good story, but we strive continually to nourish a creative climate that allows such work to flourish.
Production/Co-Production Models
There are three main models for working with us:
100% KML’s Leadership Stage Filmmaking-power up with Teams productions
These productions are financed entirely by the KML. These projects are sometimes initiated internally. Sometimes the idea is brought to us by a creator. KML retains 100% of the copyright and also holds the distribution rights.
National KML’s Leadership Stage Filmmaking-power up with Teams co-productions
These productions are produced in partnership with independent production companies. KML’s Leadership Stage Filmmaking-power up with Teams is involved as minority co-producer. KML distribution rights are subject to negotiation based on strategy/goals for the production.
International KML’s Leadership Stage Filmmaking-power up with Teams co-productions
Generally, these productions involve an independent production company, an international production company and KML’s Leadership Stage Filmmaking-power up with Teams (as a minority co-producer). KML distribution rights are subject to negotiation based on strategy/goals for the production.
Basic Co-Production Terms
• In general, the KML's financial contribution will not exceed 49% of the production budget.
• The private producer and KML producer share decision-making regarding key partners, artistic elements, stakeholders, financing and budget.
• Both partners agree on the human and technical resources provided by the KML, as well as the marketing strategy.
• Division of the copyright is established pro rata among the partners according to the contribution of each to the co-production, with KML retaining an undivided copyright interest in the production in the same proportion as KML's financial participation in the co-production.
• Each partner recoups its investment according to the recoupment schedule, equally and pro portionally to their financial participation in the co-production, according priority to private investors.

SAMPRADAYA- Rediscovering Traditions 09/12/2011 - 6.30pm-Narada Gana Saba,Chennai
SAMPRADAYA- Rediscovering Traditions
The RASIKA Dance Ensemble, under the leadership of Sri. Kiran Subramanyam will present SAMRADAYA- Rediscovering Traditions, a Bharatanatyam presentation at the Narada Gana Sabha, under the auspices of Kartik Fine Arts, Chennai, on December 9th 2011 at 6.30pm.
The Kirans ask- In a world that offers a million easy choices, how can one preserve the purity of content of one’s chosen form? And then, how can one explore technique and expression, without transgressing the prescribed grammar and vocabulary? Having done that, how can one reach out to the present day generation? And how can classical dance find relevance in a contemporary society?
By presenting SAMPRADAYA, The Kirans hope to find an answer to these questions.
SAMPRADAYA is an ambitious project where traditional concepts will be challenged within the format of the Bharatanatyam idiom. Fifteen dancers will set the stage alive in a presentation that is largely inspired by the Margam format.
Concept and Choreography- Kiran Subramanyam.
All are Welcome
Attend-Watch-Enjoy :)
Virtual Dance Orchestra
The Virtual Orchestra is a multi-modal system architecture based on complex 3D sound environment processing and acompact user interface. The system architecture supports high performance sound content for VR applications, and the user controls the performance with a magnetically tracked handheld device.
Leadership stage through arts-Dance-music
Virtual dance-orchester with Marion Dill, Kazue Ikeda, Angelo Della Iacono, Sipho Manesh, Arthur Staedli
One of the most exciting and rich experiences in the real world is music and all that surrounds it. A music performance—be it a classical music concert performed by a symphonic orchestra or a rock concert—always conveys a range of experiences. Music stimulates multiple senses at once. We hear and feel the sound vibrations in our bodies, and watching the performance complements the experience. As a result, we end up jumping, dancing, or discreetly following the rhythm with our arms or feet.
The objective of our work is to give music amateurs the opportunity to conduct a group of musicians and produce a new kind of multimedia experience. To explore this idea, we developed a semi-immersive virtual reality (VR) system, based on a large projection screen, designed to create an entertaining multimedia experience for nonexpert users. We decided to implement a music performance simulator, a VR system where several virtual characters play different musical instruments and adapt their performance according to the user's instructions.
Although we pay special attention to the realism of the scenario's visual representation, animating the musicians, and the music they produce (3D sound rendering), the conducting interface doesn't try to accurately reproduce the complex interaction of conducting an orchestra. This is left as future work. We provide an interface that partially captures the expressivity of users' gestures without forcing them to perform a specific conducting pattern.

Memories of Madras – An ode to Sampradaya by Chitra Swaminathan, The Hindu
O.S. Thyagarajan on the enduring appeal of Margazhi, the simplicity of vidwans and why he made the city his home
Before settling down in Madras, every year I would gladly leave behind the biting winters of Delhi to enjoy the misty Margazhi air, take part in the annual music celebrations and witness the largest gathering of rasikas here. You may be busy performing through the year, but Margazhi kutcheris have always had a special appeal and flavour.
The Season then meant a few prominent sabhas, many restful sessions of music and relaxed and discerning listeners who savoured and analysed every note. The audience knew what to expect from each vidwan, who had remarkably distinctive styles. They had some compositions and ragas as their specialities… rather a concert trademark. There was an unspoken understanding between stalwarts; they would never tread into each other's area of specialisation.
Mention Karaharapriya ragam or ‘Chakani Raja' and Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer immediately came to mind. Listeners flocked to hear Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar's rendition of ‘Sree Subrahmanya Namaste'. Rasikas could never have enough of Madurai Mani Iyer's ‘Sarasa Sama Dhana' in Kapi Narayani while ‘Radha Sametha Krishna' in Yaman was a favourite of G.N. Balasubramaniam.
Artistes performed only when invited. Seeking opportunities was unheard of. They chose the time and date of their kutcheri. Their concert calendars were never crammed. And they ensured there was enough time between performances to unwind and prepare.
Hearing these musical giants meant free lessons on aesthetic sensibilities and developing a sound understanding of the various aspects of this classical art. There was mutual respect and admiration among the old-world artistes, who when not performing could be seen sitting among the first few rows at kutcheris of their contemporaries or sometimes would even come to listen to a promising youngster.
Apart from hard initial training under my father O.V. Subramaniam, Tiger Varadachariar and Tanjore Ponniah Pillai, it was the valuable guidance, encouragement and support of generous masters such as Lalgudi Jayaraman and T.M. Thygarajan that earned me the reputation of a musician with undiluted values. They approached teaching in a holistic manner. It was not just about preparing students for stage performances. Vadyars ensured understanding the art in its totality and groomed thinking musicians.
The legends of the past remain so because of their vidwat, sense of dignity and a modest vision. I have seen Madurai Mani Iyer going to a kutcheri sitting in amattu vandi with Lalgudi Jayaraman and Pazhani Subramania Pillai walking behind. Umayalpuram Sivaraman once arrived for a concert lugging his mridangam in a cycle rickshaw. The most touching moment was when at a Music Academy concert, M.S. Anantharaman put down his violin as a mark of appreciation after I sang a Bhairavi piece. It was heartening when many of the acclaimed names accompanied me on stage — Lalgudi Jayaraman, Palghat Raghu,
Trichy Sankaran, M.S. Gopalakrishnan, M.S. Anantharaman and Karaikudi Mani. They even took time out to help me embellish my music with their valuable inputs. Lalgudi sir would invite me home for long discussions. Such was their involvement and large-heartedness.
At one of my initial concerts at Krishna Gana Sabha as part of their talent promotion series, I was highly-appreciated for my rendition of ‘Nidhi chaala sukhama' in Kalyani ragam and also for some of my GNB-inspired technical flourishes. A landmark concert, it proved to be a turning point in my career as other sabhas took notice of this and invited me to perform. I owe it to the late Yagnaraman, the secretary of Krishna Gana Sabha, who after hearing me on the radio, called me in Delhi and offered me a prestigious platform.
The experience was overwhelming. Heart is where art is — with each passing year I became eager to shift base and I finally did. To sing to audiences in Madras, hear stalwarts and imbibe from their music — this is the sotthu(treasure) I have earned.
I remember
It was a concert organised for a small audience by my French friends in Pondicherry. The venue was bustling with people when I arrived. The miffed security man stopped me at the gate and said I could stand at the entrance if I wanted to hear the music. Later, when he came to know I was the performing artiste, he could not hide his embarrassment.
BIO Born on April 3, 1947, is known for his adherence to tradition and unalloyed classicism. He had his early training from his musician-father O.V. Subramaniam and from legendary artistes Tiger Varadachariar and Tanjore Ponniah Pillai. A top grade artiste of the All India Radio and Doordarshan, he has been performing across the country and abroad. His vidwat has been recognised with awards from cultural organisations.
