KalaAnantarupah’s Leadership Stage Mime Theatre in 'Expressive Doctors' Management-Workshop by Thiyagarajakumar Ramaswamy- 27th March 2012 – Bangalore- 1 to 4pm - 103 Doctors –Workshop was a Big success:)

Leadership Stage Mime Theatre is considered an original contribution to the fields of arts- movement therapy and the music practice. A combined phenomenological and heuristic research model was used to study the experiences of mime; theatre, dance movement therapy with music. He has considered him as a social catalyst to change the world through his Leadership Stage program.

Thiyagarajakumar Ramaswamy recognize the pressing need for teaching Leadership Stage Mime Theatre’s Expressive Intellgence  methods  that encourage empathy in doctors profession. He suggests that a leadership mime theatre can help doctors become better caregivers. Now Thiyagarajakumar Ramaswamy propose a broader understanding of performance  have explored the Mime theatre expressive intelligence concept with the management people already..Now,he has applied the concept  to the doctors.

“He suggested viewing doctors empathy as Expressive intelligence method and how doctors can achieve empathy through acting”. Our Expressive doctor training focussed on the impact that body language, eye contact, verbal cues and attentiveness  have on doctor-patient interactions, and this skills taught appeared to significantly improve both a dcotor’s bedside manner and patient trust.

“I propose that the expressive intelligence of doctors is characterized by the display of empathy” said Dr.Thiyagarajakumar Ramaswamy, director of kalaanantarupah’s Leadership Stage Mime Theatre

“Empathy is essential to healing relationships, so It’s something all medical professionals should be expected to show – even when it’s hard to do so”.

Drawing from previous research that equates management service workers’ of the stage actors, Thiyagarajakumar Ramaswamy, describe a model for applying acting techniques to the delivery of empathy in doctor-patient interactions. He suggest that doctors use two techniques separately or in combination – ‘Life acting’ which uses imagination and emotional memories to generate genuine feelings of empathy for the patient, and’ Love acting’. In which the doctor forges emotional expressions inconsistent with internal feelings. This would allow the doctor to display behaviors the patient can interpret as empathic. And we thought that a lot of the stuff that’s being taught to mime theatre students is a very similar to what doctors could benefit from the terms of communicating with patients.

Thiyagarajakumar Ramaswamy contend that Life acting is preferred because it makes doctors more effective healers, He also believe doctors have greater professional satisfaction and less professional burnout when they practice Life acting, but many have to rely on Love acting when genuine empathy  seems impossible, Love acting may be needed, for example. In situations in which the doctor’s value or beliefs are entirely different from the patients. He also stressed the importance of the subtle but powerful role that body language, eye contact, vocal inflection, breathing rhythms and overall expressiveness can have on building a good relationships with patients.

If a doctors does not possess the necessary skills to assess a patient’s emotional needs and to display clear and effective responses to those needs.the job is not done. Consequently, he believe that doctors education system should include an acting curriculm, focussed o the conveying of appropriate, beneficial responses to those emotional needs”.

“ We are not trying to teach doctors to be actors,” said Thiyagarajakumar Ramaswamy. “ But there are some valuable communication skills that doctors are just not learning and that the medical education system is just not thinking about right now. ”But there’s a lot of emotion and nuance that is also part of that communication and that is really the art of expressive doctor- rather than the technical aspect of what stuff later”. If Leadership Stage Mime Theatre becomes a part of medical college curriculm, we would see scenes like this one : “ Problem : Obesity,Old way; Doctors gives printed diet sheet, New way , Music swells as doctor stands in front of brilliant sunset, tears welling up, and makes the emotional, heart-rending promise.” As god is my witness, you will always be hungry again”.

As humorous as that is, recognize that proper Leadership Stage Mime Theatre does help a patient tell more of what ails him during diagnosis, better understand treatment choices, and more readily handle the theraphy, Further,Leadership Stage Mime Theatre in medical research backs up the contention that doctors must be actors, Numerous studies demonstrates that those doctors who deal with their patients in a more caring, emphatic manner-in short, those with better beside manners- not only face fewer lawsuits but have better patient treatment outcomes. Similarly, everyone in contact with patients must understand their role, fill it with the proper characterization and perform it well in every interaction. His perspective on body language awareness is topical and humorous!! He uses an interactive approach with a sense of excitement and fun to increase people's sense of self-worth and the power of their inherent verbal and nonverbal communication skills.

Leadership Stage Mime Theatre workshops are an epiphany for people. They teach individuals and companies the nonverbal tools and techniques they need to develop new mind sets to create new possibilities in their lives, be more productive in their personal and business lives. For individuals and companies that learn and employ these skill sets, the results personally and to the bottom line are phenomenal
